Summer 2015 – Summer Course to French Canada
The course is open to juniors, seniors and graduate students for three or five hours of credit. It will be led by Dr. Fritz Wagner and Dr. Régent Cabana. We will visit three Canadian cities—Montreal, Québec City and Ottawa—where a number of professors, government officials and other urban experts will give lectures and tours. We will look at the European influence as well as the distinctive Canadian French culture of these cities that make them unique in North America. See the flyer here.

Winter 2013 – Task Force on Arctic Policy
The 2013 Task Force on Arctic Policye is a joint program between the Canadian and Global Studies Centers in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington (UW) and Donat Savoie, Nunavik Student Advisor/Consultant. Donat Savoie is an Anthropologist by training and has occupied several senior positions within Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada for more than 35 years in areas related to Arctic, Inuit and Circumpolar Affairs. He is presently Special Advisor to the Office of the President of Makivik Corporation. He has received several honours during his career and was appointed to the National Order of Québec in 2010 by the Premier of the Province of Québec, the highest recognition of the province for his work amongst the Inuit. The vision of the program is to bring UW students together with their Inuit colleagues in Canada to address effective ways to govern the international Arctic region.

Summer 2012 – Quebec Cinema
Francophone Cinemas will explore the very designation ‘Francophone’ as it relates to French national belonging among populations outside France, particularly Quebec and West African French speaking nations within Quebec. Read more about the course here.

Summer 2012 – Summer Course to Québec
The course will focus on the current urban issues confronting communities in the Canadian provice of Québec by studying the physical layout of cities, urban design, urban growth, problems related to the environment and governmental institutions as well as historical, social and cultural factors specific to Québec cities and Ottawa. Students will travel as a class to Québec, visiting Montreal, Québec City and Ottowa, attending tours and lectures given by area professors and other experts. See the flyer here.

Spring 2012 – The Arctic – A Canadian Perspective
Gain a deeper understanding of Canada’s Arctic region and the forces that shaped its past and that will influence its future. At the foundation of the course is the ability to identify the unique human and environment systems present in the Arctic and their interdependent relationships. Discussion topics will include early indigenous settlement and European exploration, the sustainability and impacts of resource development, a geo-cultural and political exploration of Aboriginal cultures and current issues including differing national and international views on Arctic sovereignty. This interactive course will reflect the Canadian Arctic experience and its responses to the increasing cultural and environmental global importance of its far north regions. Summer 2011 – Vancouver Study Abroad
The study abroad course examined the evolution in theory and practice of Vancouver’s queer community, and the importance of documenting its ongoing growth and change.

Summer 2011 – Summer Course to Québec
The course focused on the current urban issues confronting communities in the Canadian provice of Québec by studying the physical layout of cities, urban design, urban growth, problems related to the environment and governmental institutions as well as historical, social and cultural factors specific to Québec cities and Ottawa. Winter 2011 – Arctic Governance Task Force
The 2011 Task Force on Arctic Governance is a joint program between the Canadian and Global Studies Centers in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington (UW) and the Makivik Corporation, Nunavik, Province of Québec, Canada as part of the UW and Makivik Corporation Educational Agreement Initiative. The vision of the program is to bring UW students together with their Inuit colleagues in Canada to address effective ways to govern the international Arctic region.

Summer 2010 – US-EU Canada Policy Challenges
Building a Green Recovery is a new UW summer program that integrated the academic study of North American and European policy making with real-life exposure to contemporary policy challenges related to environmental degradation and economic growth. Read more about the course here.
