Shared Spaces: The Making and Remaking of Black and Jewish Seattle
In a walking tour, students will discover the city through the eyes of two of its oldest ethnic communities. Black Heritage Society of Washington State President Stephanie Johnson-Toliver and local Jewish historian Howard Droker will take the group to the Central District’s historic Black and Jewish neighborhoods, where they once lived, worked, and worshipped. After working up an appetite, attendees will finish the 1.5-2 mile tour at Cafe Selam, a beloved Ethiopian restaurant. Hosted by the Stroum Center for Jewish Studies and American Ethnic Studies department. Meet outside Thomson Hall and board a bus from there to the Central District. Who “owns” the new frontier? There’s way more to it than you can imagine! Join space security expert Saadia M. Pekkanen, Jackson School professor and professor and founding director of the Space Law, Data and Policy program (SPACE LDP) at the UW School of Law, as she provides a brief and impactful introduction to cybersecurity, technology and diplomacy. Hear about emerging threats and new developments in international security in outer space. Then take your own journey into space with a wonderful Planetarium presentation. Follow up with a fun get together of snacks and conversation. A real treat for all new and current students! Space is limited. First come, first served. United Nations, Anyone?
What is it really like to work at the United Nations? Here is a rare opportunity to meet with someone who’s been there, done that. Kevin Cassidy’s career at the United Nations has seen him travel the world, working on everything from landmine issues to high-level policy language. He has developed communication initiatives in over 40 countries, including interactive radio and television programs, and trained journalists on communicating locally on fundamental rights at work, child labor, forced labor, discrimination, and the freedom of association.
