About

Jesús Hidalgo (he/him) is the Graduate Program Adviser at the University of Washington Jackson School of International Studies (UW JSIS) Office of Academic Services (OAS). His name is pronounced: he-ZUS i-DAL-go.

Here at JSIS OAS… I am responsible for providing academic guidance to graduate students in all 2-year MA programs and the Ph.D. program. Additionally, I promote and recruit students for the graduate programs and serve as a liaison with APSIA (Association of Professional Schools in International Affairs).

I like thinking about and studying… the connection between football (soccer) and social issues: racism, gender inequality, ethnonationalism, migration, human rights, social movements, environment, etc.

My first year in college… I took more classes than what I needed for my major (Hispanic literature) because I was curious about Philosophy and History as well.

Fun facts:

  • I was once featured in public television in Portugal: I was visiting Lisbon by myself as I was 20 years old, and a young lady started screaming at me in Portuguese. I tried to communicate with her in a sort of portuñol (half Portuguese, half Spanish), but, at some point, I just left without really knowing what had happened. Later that day, I passed by the place where the lady had screamed at me, and a person recognized me. A TV crew approached me and said they worked for a hidden-camera TV show in a Portuguese national TV channel. They thought my made-up Portuguese-Spanish was hilarious and they were going to include that clip in the program later that week. I never watched it though, but I did get a picture with the actress.
  • I have been a huge FC Barcelona fan since I was a kid. However, my dad was a Real Madrid fan and thought I could become a Madrid fan too, so we watched our first El Clásico together in 1994. Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 5-0 that day, and since then, I am a culé. Before he passed away, we watched another El Clásico together, and he ended up supporting Barcelona too.
