The West Coast Model European Union is an annual simulation of a European Council summit, bringing together undergraduate students from across the United States and Canada. Students, in teams of two, play the roles of representatives of European Union Member State delegations. Participants negotiate two issues of concern for the country holding the Presidency.

Topics for the 2024 Model EU in brief:

  • Heads of Government
    • Proposal to clarify the long-term status of Türkiye’s European Union membership application
    • Proposal to stand up a coherent European defense capability parallel to NATO
  • Interior Ministers
    • Proposal to require media and communications companies to open all encrypted customer communications to government agencies
    • Proposal to expand Frontex as a unified Coast Guard agency in the Mediterranean

For a detailed description of these topics, please view the Communication from the Presidency below.

About the Model EU

University Registration and Fees

  • University Registration and Country Request Form 2024  Closed.
  • Registration Fee
    • There is a student registration fee of $49 per student. There is no registration fee for participating faculty.
      • Unlike in previous years, universities traveling to Seattle to participate in the 2024 West Coast Model EU will NOT be invoiced for student participation fees and should NOT send checks or electronic payments to the University of Washington. Instead, UW will deduct student registration fees from university hotel reimbursements after the event.  This 2024 change is in response to comments by participating universities that having checks issued and sent to UW was administratively complicated. It is also a recognition that having funds flowing in two directions between universities is a bureaucratic burden and a duplication of effort.
      • Local, Seattle-area universities who will not require hotel reimbursement should WILL be invoiced for their student registration fees and must submit their checks to the University of Washington according to the terms on the invoices they receive.
