South Asia faculty Sunila S. Kale and Christian Novetzke continue their explorations of the global presence of yoga with Yoga and the Means and Ends of Secularism in The Wire.
“In 2016, the Indian Supreme Court asked the Centre to formulate a policy on yoga instruction in state schools, something it hasn’t done yet. Here we take a look at a similar case in the US, a case regularly cited in Indian discussions.”
The decision in this case from California was resolved with a paradox: “Here is the ruling’s paradox: Judge Meyer determined that yoga was both religious and not religious simultaneously.”
