On Thursday, October 22, the South Asia Center hosted Dr. Shailaja Paik (Associate Professor of History, University of Cincinnati) to discuss her new book project “Becoming Vulgar”: Caste, Sexuality, and Humanity in Modern India. Bringing together students and faculty across multiple departments at UW, this reading workshop gave junior scholars a rare opportunity to read and ask questions about Paik’s book proposal and manuscript development. A short presentation from Dr. Paik was followed by a lively discussion about Dalit politics in Maharashtra, discourses of humanity, and casteism in modern South Asia.
