Sudhir Mahadevan Discusses Badnam Basti, Long-Lost Queer Film from India

On Thursday, May 7, the Block Museum at Northwestern University held a virtual screening of the 1971 film Badnam Basti, followed by a Q&A with Professor Sudhir Mahadevan (UW Cinema & Media Studies) and Simran Bhalla (Ph.D. candidate, Screen Cultures, Northwestern University). Badnam Basti, considered one of the first LGBTQ films in Indian cinema, was long thought to be lost. This screening marked the last event in the Block Cinema series “Morning Will Come: Modernity in Indian Cinema.” Watch the Q&A with Professor Mahadevan below:
