This spring, South Asia Center affiliate and Department of Asian Languages and Literature doctoral student Anjali Yadav received the Digital India Learning fellowship from the American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS). Earlier this summer, Yadav completed her project “Eternalizing the Ephemeral: Invitations As a Window to Arangetram in Bharatnatyam.”
“Eternalizing the Ephemeral” looks at Arangetram — which means “ascending the stage and signifies a moment of transference from being a student to a professional dancer,” according to Yadav — through the perspective of dance scholar Sunil Kothari. Yadav’s project was based on Kothari’s collection of over 4,000 ephemera across 59 years at AIIS’ archives and the Research Center for Ethnomusicology in Gurugram, India.
Yadav’s digital exhibition of Kothari’s collection will be available on India’s Virtual Museum of Images and Sound’s online platform soon.
