Last Saturday the South Asia Center was pleased to host “Adabi Nashist: An Urdu Literary Session. – complete with chai and samosas. Organized by Jameel Ahmad and Jennifer Dubrow (UW Department of Asian Language & Literature), the event brought together students of Urdu and Hindi from elementary to advanced levels of study, the local South Asian community, and fans of Urdu poetry. Undergraduate and graduate students prepared to read poems ranging from classical ghazals by Mirza Ghalib to well known modern poems by Faiz Ahmad Faiz. Though a number of students were nervous to read Urdu poetry in front of native speakers, everyone in attendance was incredibly supportive.
