On April 25th 2016 LACS facilitated a panel discussion titled “Berta Cáceres, Activism and Solidarity: Social Struggles in Honduras and Beyond” to honor the life and legacy of environmental activist Berta Cáceres, assassinated on March 3rd in her home in Honduras. Berta had visited the UW a few months earlier after receiving the Goldman Environmental Prize in the U.S.
Panelist Juan Rubio (Berta Cáceres’ cousin), Brady Walkinshaw (member of Washington State House of Representatives), Katrin Wilde (Executive Director of the Channel Foundation) and Yoelin Connor (Vice-President of Garinagu Hougua) engaged UW students, faculty and community members in a very emotional and inspirational conversation
