Programs and Courses

Why study Latin America and the Caribbean? We give answers to that question through every course and student we teach. LACS is committed to giving students the linguistic tool, analytical frameworks, and hemispheric range of knowledge that will prepare them for vibrant lives and careers in las Américas. At a time when many programs are cutting down on their language requirements, LACS continues to ask to acquire strong language training in at least two languages of our hemisphere (including Spanish, Portuguese, French, which are offered at UW, or Indigenous languages like Quechua and Nahuatl, which can be studied through some of our study abroad programs). Students also acquire the interdisciplinary skills through courses on Latin America offered by political scientists, anthropologists, sociologists, geographers, literary scholars and others across campus. Students also have the opportunities to study with UW faculty abroad in places like Mexico, Peru, Martinique and Dominica, and more.
