Western U.S. Graduate Research Workshop on the European Union

Student Travel Funding Available!

The European Union Center at the University of Washington is pleased to announce and solicit applications for the Western U.S. Graduate Research Workshop on the European Union, to be held at the in spring/summer 2020. Doctoral students are invited to present research proposals and work with faculty mentors and peers to fine tune their work in a supportive roundtable environment.

Applicants should submit a 250 word abstract of an E.U.-focused research proposal and C.V. through the below-linked form. Applicants must also note the current stage of their research and the name of their dissertation/thesis adviser. Upon acceptance, students should submit a developed 5-8 page version of their research proposal, which should identify their key question, their theory or approach, and a research strategy.

The workshop advances two direct aims

• To provide a forum for US-based graduate students at the dissertation level to present research on the EU to an audience of knowledgeable, supportive, yet critical faculty and peers.
• To provide methodological instruction to students in a way that is relevant to European Union-related work.

Workshop Participants

Professors James Caporaso (University of Washington), Mary Anne Madeira (Lehigh University) will be responsible for conducting the workshop, which will be organized around and informed by the research problems and opportunities presented by the EU and European integration.

Graduate students selected to participate in the workshop will be expected to give a presentation of their research and participate in all planned workshop activities. Participants will also read each other’s work before the workshop and be prepared with constructive comments at each session.

Travel

The University of Washington will cover the costs of a round trip economy airfare from participants’ home cities to Seattle, along with two nights’ hotel stay at the designated workshop hotel. (Travel arrangements made by UW, ground transportation not provided.)

 

Eligibility

Doctoral students with approved dissertation topics focusing on the EU in any academic field and enrolled at institutions in the United States may apply to attend the workshop.
