Jean Monnet EU Center

Established in 1998, the University of Washington’s EU Center (EUC) has developed a well-earned reputation for implementing innovative teaching, outreach, and research programs in the study of the EU, its institutions and policies, and EU-US relations.  The EU Center is the focal point of teaching and research on the European Union at the University of Washington, and it hosts a Jean Monnet Center of Excellence as well as a Jean Monnet Chair, both funded by the European Commission’s Erasmus+ Program. Dr. Sabine Lang is the current center Director and Jean Monnet Chair. Previously, the EU Center was led by Professor of Political Science and expert on EU integration Dr. James Caporaso. Dr. Caporaso also previously held the Jean Monnet Chair, and he is now a Senior Researcher at the EU Center. Dr. Philip Lyon is the EU Center’s Managing Director.

The Jean Monnet Center of Excellence

The Jean Monnet Center of Excellence grant encompasses an integrated set of activities designed to further strengthen EU Studies on our campus and across the US. The Center’s project, “Changing Landscapes: Climate, Gender, and Equity in the EU,” is designed to attract US high school and university students to EU studies, while also training graduate students who will be the next generation of EU academic experts. The core of the Changing Landscapes project is a set of novel and interdisciplinary learning activities that engage students with EU Studies in ways not typically available at their home institutions.

The Jean Monnet Chair

Dr. Sabine Lang holds the Jean Monnet Chair in Civil Society, Inclusion, and Diversity in the EU (CIDEU). Jean Monnet Chairs are three-year teaching and research posts for university professors with a specialization in European Union studies. Following a global competitive selection process, the European Commission awards the Chair to qualified professors who focus their teaching and research on topics relevant to European integration. Jean Monnet Chairs are named after Jean Monnet, who was one of the main architects of European integration.
