The Center for West European Studies and the European Union Center are honored to host Ernesto Penas Lado, Director of Policy Development and Coordination, DG Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, European Commission, as our EU Fellow for the 2016-2017 academic year working on the special study “Cooperation with the US on World’s Ocean Governance.”

The University of Washington is key for this project – the university not only has worldwide recognition as a center of excellence on maritime sciences and fisheries, but also their experience is focused on the Pacific area, where Europe has relative little experience. Seattle also hosts an important branch of the US’ National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Mr. Penas Lado has held multiple director-level and Head of Unit positions within the Commission, including Director for Baltic Sea, North Sea and Landlocked Member States. His widely recognized expertise and long experience in fisheries management and governance make Mr. Penas Lado an ideal EU Fellow for the University of Washington.
