The Hellenic Studies Summer Program, directed by Jackson School faculty Nektaria Klapaki and Taso Lagos, continues to be a popular choice for University of Washington students seeking immersive cultural and academic experiences abroad. From June 17 to Aug. 16, 20 students will split their time between Deree College in Athens and Harvard University’s Center for Hellenic Studies in the historic seaside town of Nafplio.

Students will conduct ethnographic interviews while fully engaging with Greece’s culture, history, and landscapes. The program explores how and why Greece became a magnet for European and American travelers in the 19th and 20th centuries, the emigration waves of the 1950s-60s, and Greece’s role — particularly since the 1990s — as a host country for immigrants. Students will also investigate the impact of mass tourism and the growing importance of sustainability in modern Greek society.

In addition to academic work, students will explore Greece’s rich cultural heritage, visiting:

  • The Acropolis and New Acropolis Museum

  • Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games

  • The classical theater of Epidauros

  • Scenic islands like Aegina and Hydra
