Knut Hamsun and Early European Modernism | Winter 2017

June 15, 2016

JSIS A 482, Winter 2017
Lectures TTH 1:30-3:20

In this course, coming Winter Quarter 2017, we will read and discuss significant novels by Knut Hamsun, as well as comparing them with works by other modernist writers (James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, etc.). Our goal is to explore European culture, psychological and social issues in the period leading up to WWII. Hamsun, who received the Nobel Prize in 1920, was highly influential during this era. What can literary modernists teach us about intellectual history and the “stream of consciousness”?
