Immigration and Cultural Memory in the Pacific Northwest
M/W, 10:30-12:20
What has been the impact of immigrants on the culture of the Pacific Northwest? What is the relationship between immigrant involvement in local culture and their assimilation and integration into mainstream society? These are some of the questions we will address as we focus on the the impact of immigration on local culture and society beginning in the early 1900s. The class emphasizes students conducting original archival research for the expressed purpose of not only highlighting but providing a record of local immigrant cultural contribution, particularly in the area of movie and stage theaters.
Students will assemble their findings into an actual paperback book at the end of the quarter.
