Money, Love, and Marriage in Europe and America
T/TH 10:30am-12:20pm
SLN 16802
Marriage for love or money? This all-too familiar dilemma between a romantic version of marriage versus one based on economic considerations captures a range of key issues including gender identities and relations, feminist and patriarchal ideology, and the relationship between desire, marriage and capital. Using this dilemma as its starting point, the course provides an interdisciplinary discussion of the above issues by drawing on seminal texts in the fields of history, anthropology, feminist literary criticism and cultural studies, and with case studies drawn from modern England, Greece and America.
