Research and Publications

Each spring, Fellows have the opportunity to have their final research project submitted to the annual Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff National Defense and Military Strategy Essay Competition, among other contests. These competitions include some of the most prestigious writing competitions in the Department of Defense.

Example research awards and publications:

  • LTC Malcolm Warbrick (UW AWC Fellow 2021-2022) published the article “Time to Integrate State Partnership Program in Pentagon Planning” in Breaking Defense, February 25, 2022.
  • In June 2022, Col. Derek Smith (UW AWC Fellow 2021-2022) placed fourth for the Army War College Foundation Award for Outstanding Research Project for his paper titled China’s Crisis-driven Water Diplomacy: A Cautionary Tale of U.S. Opportunity and Response
  • In June 2020, Col. Kukunaokala Mendonca (UW AWC Fellow 2019-2020) placed second in the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff National Defense and Military Strategy Essay Competition for his essay titled “Cybersecurity Issues in the National Guard: Opportunities and Challenges”
  • In June 2016, inaugural Fellow (UW AWC Fellow 2015-2016) Col. Jaren Price placed second in the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff National Defense and Military Strategy Essay Competition for his essay titled “The Rebirth of Japan’s Amphibious Forces: Regional Security Implications”
