What made you choose the University of Washington?

The University of Washington has an outstanding reputation on the international stage. During my work for the government of my country and in the international development sector, I had the privilege of meeting several exceptional professionals who were alumni of the Jackson School of International Studies at UW. One of the Jackson School alumni was leading the largest education project in the country, showcasing exceptional expertise in program management and impact-driven initiatives. Another worked on disaster response and repatriation efforts, demonstrating a profound commitment to humanitarian work and crisis management. This further reinforced my belief in the school’s excellence, so I am here today.

What was your reaction to receiving the Leslianne Shedd Memorial Fund Internship Scholarship?

I felt deep gratitude. Thanks to the generosity of the Shedd family, this scholarship has allowed me to apply and expand my skills in meaningful ways during my internship, an experience that will significantly enhance my Ph.D. research and shape my future career. Thanks to scholarships like these, students like me pursuing impactful experiences have a chance to work on their dreams.

What organization did you complete your internship at and what were your responsibilities?

I interned with Spirit of America, an independently funded international NGO. During my time there, I helped to conduct a regional-level situational analysis that will be instrumental in shaping the organization’s strategic development for 2025. My contributions ranged from evaluating U.S. policy toward Central Asian countries to identifying key sectors for potential collaboration and providing research vital to advancing Spirit of America’s mission.

In addition to policy assessment, I collaborated with local partners, contributed to research on radicalization, and developed a comprehensive database of experts to support future projects and initiatives. This multifaceted experience enhanced my understanding of the region’s challenges while reinforcing Spirit of America’s capacity to address them effectively.

How will this award help your goals and career path?

This experience has been instrumental in my professional growth. It allowed me to apply and expand my skills in meaningful ways. Working with Spirit of America has given me a unique opportunity to grow, develop professionally, and contribute to an organization I deeply respect. The lessons I have learned during this internship will enhance my Ph.D. research and shape my future career. This experience will always be a significant milestone in my journey, and the Shedd family’s support has made it all possible.

What key skills have you learned at the Jackson School that you’ll apply to your career?

The Jackson School has provided me with a robust and diverse skill set that will be invaluable in my career. Under the exceptional guidance of my dissertation committee and mentors, I have sharpened my research and analytical abilities, particularly in synthesizing complex global issues and identifying patterns that inform policy decisions. Working closely with my research adviser, Dr. Sabine Lang, I have strengthened my ability to navigate complex materials, effectively draft academic documents, and produce concise policy briefs.
Most importantly, I have developed a multidisciplinary approach to problem-solving, integrating historical, political, and economic perspectives to address challenges holistically. These skills, paired with a strong commitment to ethical leadership and professionalism, will serve as a solid foundation as I transition into the workforce after graduation.

What advice would you give to students considering applying for Jackson School Internship Scholarships?

Make sure to stay in touch with your academic adviser and career counselor — they are invaluable resources for your success. For me, those key people were Dr. Jesús Hidalgo and Peg L. Cheng.

Jesús has been instrumental in guiding my academic journey, keeping me on track, and providing unwavering support with my best interests at heart. His mentorship has been a cornerstone of my progress, and it was through his recommendation that I connected with Peg. Peg, the Assistant Director of Student Services at the Jackson School of International Studies, has been an exceptional guide throughout my application and career planning process. While it’s easy to feel informed by browsing online resources, Peg’s expertise ensures that your path is not only well-informed but also strategically efficient.

My advice is to work closely with your academic adviser and Peg throughout the entire process. Their insights and support will make a significant difference in achieving your academic and career goals. Being in touch with Peg, in particular, is essential for navigating the application process effectively.
