Studying abroad can be one of the most formative experiences in the life of a student. Though students’ reasons for studying abroad are varied, most find that the education, language, and life lessons learned while abroad are immensely rewarding, professionally and personally.  Most of the study abroad programs that Jackson School students attend are organized through the UW Study Abroad Office. Comparative History of Ideas (CHID) also offers a few international programs and opportunities.

Independent Research/Internship

Independent Research/Internship is appropriate for students wishing to perform independent work abroad. To do this, you must complete an Independent Research Packet. This requires you to first develop a research proposal and find a UW faculty member who will advise you throughout your research project and who will ultimately grade your final product. Students will make all of their own arrangements regarding housing, host country contacts, etc. All of the administration and paperwork for this type of study abroad is handled by the Study Abroad Office.

Program for Education and Research in Latin America (PERLA)

PERLA (UW Department of Global Health) was formed in 2012 in order to encourage multidisciplinary research, training and implementation activities and provide a forum to bring together U.S. and Latin American and Caribbean researchers, faculty and students to improve the health and well-being of Latin American people.

Unaffiliated Study Abroad Programs

These programs use their own faculty and are sponsored by established organizations that take students from different schools to a particular study site. Contact IPE for guidance on UW administrative and credit requirements.

• Gyana Lesley Abroad Service Semester (GLASS). Earn sixteen credits collaborating with Guyana villagers on ecological and education initiatives in pristine South American savannah and rain forest. The Guyana Lesley Abroad Service Semester (GLASS) provides the opportunity for profound cultural exchange between Lesley students and the Macushi people of the Yupukari region in Guyana. The first study abroad program in the country of Guyana, GLASS is unique in that it supports a local initiative to increase literacy and numeracy among the local indigenous population, while providing rigorous education in environmental studies.
• Northwestern’s Global Engagement Summer Institute (GESI) prepares undergraduate students with the knowledge, tools and experiences to confront shared global problems. Through transformative opportunities in international service learning, students form partnerships with grassroots NGOs and communities in the developing world to advance sustainable, community-driven change in Bolivia and Nicaragua. • The Mexico Solidarity Network‘s study abroad experience offers a dynamic student-centered pedagogical approach combined with direct interaction with some of Mexico’s most important social movements. Our unique integration of theory and practice provides you with important lessons for organizing work back home and an in depth appreciation of the various socio-political struggles in the region.
• Intensive Quechua Summer Course in Cuzco is co-organized between U. Michigan and the Centro Tinku. Students have the possibility of receiving U. Michigan credit and can choose to home-stay with selected families, all of which have quechua-speaking members. This will give you the opportunity to speak and interact with Quechua speakers in a real-life setting. Additionally, the program plans some travel to fiestas and traditional events where you will be able to test your linguistic skills. This intensive program consists of 3 levels (Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced) taught 4 hours a day, five days a week, plus a daily 2-hour workshop every afternoon where you will be able to get language and grammar support.
• Study Abroad in Guatemala: Programa Internacional de Educación y Acción Social (IDEAS) The Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Arizona invites you to participate in its renowned study abroad program in Guatemala, the International Program for Education and Social Action (IDEAS). We partner with the Association for the Advancement of the Social Sciences in Guatemala, one of Guatemala’s leading intellectual centers that emphasizes the connection between research and social action (http://avancso.org.gt/). Classes are held in the El Sitio Cultural Center in Antigua, Guatemala (www.elsitiocultural.org/), a stunningly beautiful World Heritage town (http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/65), and students live with Guatemalan families in Antigua.
• Field School Program in Peru: Indigenous Rights and Legal Pluralism: This course is organized by the PUCP and the Instituto Internacional de Derecho y Sociedad-IIDS and comprises the International Exchange Program in multiculturalism, legal pluralism, and indigenous rights.
  This course on indigenous rights will follow the work experience of the Strategic Litigation on Indigenous Rights Section of the Clinic of the Law Faculty at the PUCP. For over two years, the objective of the Strategic Litigation on indigenous rights Section of the Clinic has been to develop capacities of the students in order to provide legal defence in access to information and indigenous rights as part of a strategic litigation oriented to strengthen democracy and human rights.
