Summer Funding

American Councils Study Abroad Funding

  • Fulbright-Hays Fellowships – Russian (Spring 2024, Summer 2024 and Fall 2024): Provided by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by American Councils, Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Fellowships are available to advanced-level Russian language speakers who plan to participate in the American Councils Advanced Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP) in Almaty, Kazakhstan or Yerevan, Armenia. Participants should be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, who are undergraduate students with upperclassmen standing (juniors or seniors), graduate students, or U.S. K-12 teachers. Participants must also demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching Russian in universities or K-12 schools, or to applying their language skills in government, international development, or other professional fields. Fellowship awards range from $3,100 to $5,800 for online programs and $5,000 to $9,000 for overseas programs. Fulbright-Hays fellowships are awarded on the basis of financial need and academic merit. Vladimir Gross Russia Scholarship (Undergraduate Summer Travel)

Eligibility:
  • Exceptional undergraduate students, including international students, interested in studying in Russia or a Russian-speaking country. Priority will be given to undergraduates to travel to Russia or a Russian-speaking country to study the Russian language, but funds may also support undergraduate students to travel to Russia or a Russian-speaking country to study the country’s history, literature or culture. Upon completion of study a report on the experience will be expected.  You may apply for the Gross Undergraduate Fellowship through the Jackson School Fellowship Application System.

Application Materials:
  • A written proposal, in essay format, of approximately two single-spaced pages detailing your academic plan and how the fellowship fits in with your education and/or career plans
  • Official or unofficial transcripts from all colleges or universities attended (in electronic format; no hard copies accepted)
  • Letters of recommendation; 1 general and 1 language recommendation.

Imre Boba Summer Research Fellowship (Graduate & Undergraduate Summer Travel)

Eligibility:
  • The Ellison Center offers the Boba Summer Research Fellowship for exceptional students studying Eastern Europe or Central Asia to travel to the region for research, internships or advanced language study in an accredited language program. Upon completion of study, Boba fellows must submit a short report on their summer experience.

Awards:
  • $1600
Application
Materials:
  • A two-page essay, double-spaced, 12-point font (Courier, Arial or Times New Roman), with one-inch margins on all sides, in which you explain your summer plans and how these funds will assist you.
  • One faculty letter of support.
  • An unofficial copy of your transcript.
