Summer and Travel Fellowships

Vladimir Gross Russia Scholarship (Undergraduate Summer)

Eligibility:
  • Exceptional undergraduate students, including international students, interested in studying in Russia. Priority will be given to undergraduates to travel to Russia to study the Russian language, but funds may also support undergraduate students to travel to Russia to study the country’s history, literature or culture. Upon completion of study a report on the experience will be expected.  Undergraduate applicants to the Summer FLAS will be considered automatically. If you are not eligible for a FLAS, you may apply for the Gross Undergraduate Fellowship through the Jackson School Fellowship Application System.
Deadline:
  • January 31, 2019
Awards:
  • $1500
Application Materials:
  • A written proposal, in essay format, of approximately two single-spaced pages detailing your academic plan and how the fellowship fits in with your education and/or career plans
  • Official or unofficial transcripts from all colleges or universities attended (in electronic format; no hard copies accepted)
  • Letters of recommendation; 1 general and 1 language recommendation.
  • Apply through the FLAS and Other JSIS Fellowships portal.

The Gross Fellowship shares a common application with the FLAS Fellowship. 

Imre Boba Summer Research Fellowship (Graduate & Undergraduate Summer)

Eligibility:
  • The Ellison Center offers the Boba Summer Research Fellowship for exceptional students studying Eastern Europe or Central Asia to travel to the region for research, internships or advanced language study in an accredited language program. Upon completion of study, Boba fellows must submit a short report on their summer experience.
Deadline:
  • January 31, 2019
Awards:
  • $1000
Application
Materials:
  • A two-page essay, double-spaced, 12-point font (Courier, Arial or Times New Roman), with one-inch margins on all sides, in which you explain your summer plans and how these funds will assist you.
  • One faculty letter of support.
  • An unofficial copy of your transcript.
  • Apply through the FLAS and Other JSIS Fellowships portal.

Please Note: This award cannot be combined with other major UW summer travel funding. Students may combine the Boba Fellowship with other non-UW summer funding only with approval from the Ellison Center.

Ilse D. Cirtautas Central Asian Studies Fellowship (Graduate & Undergrad Travel)

Eligibility:
  • The Cirtautas Fellowship is available for undergraduate or graduate students from any UW program who are studying Central Asia.
Deadline:
  • January 31, 2019
Awards:
  • $2,000 for travel to Central Asia or to attend a conference such as ASEEES or CESS to present on the region.
Application
Materials:
  • Statement of Purpose explaining how the funds will be used and how it will support academic pursuits.
  • One faculty letter of support.
  • An unofficial copy of your transcript.
  • Apply through the FLAS and Other JSIS Fellowships portal.
