Marcy Migdal Fund for Educational Equality

The application cycle for 2027-2028 awards will open in spring 2027.  

The Marcy Migdal Fund supports exceptional students engaged in activities aimed at enhancing access to education for vulnerable students, either locally or throughout the world, and helping them succeed in their education. The Marcy Migdal Scholarship currently provides awards up to $2,500 to oversee and complete a community-focused project. 

Marcy Migdal was known throughout Washington state as a leading educator in the field of multicultural education and for her passionate commitment to social justice and advocacy for the most vulnerable members of our community. It is the intent of this endowment that Marcy’s selfless dedication and activist spirit live on in this award. Scholarships will be awarded based on the adherence of the proposed activities to the priorities of the Marcy Migdal Fund. Learn more about Marcy Migdal here.

Eligible activities include outreach and training events for underserved students, investments in resources and professional development for student-run organizations and educational institutions serving vulnerable students, the development and dissemination of curricula and advocacy resources, applied research that includes near-term community impacts. The scope for the Marcy Migdal Scholarship is broad, and applicants are encouraged to propose thoughtful and creative projects.  

Recipients will be notified about awards in the summer, and projects may be carried out in the summer or the following fall, winter, or spring quarters. Payments for summer projects will be made in the fall, and payments for fall, winter, and spring projects will be made in the quarter the project takes place. Recipients must be enrolled full time during the quarter the award is distributed and must complete the project prior to graduating. Award recipients are required to complete a project report of one to two pages detailing outcomes. 

Eligibility 

Open to all degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Washington’s Bothell, Seattle, and Tacoma campuses. Applicants must: 

• Be current UW students in good standing 

• Be enrolled full time in the quarter when the award is distributed 

• Complete the project before graduating 

Application Materials and Procedure 

Applicants apply through the College of Arts and Sciences Scholarship Application Portal and are asked to provide biographical information, transcripts and a resume, and a statement of purpose that describes the proposed project and responds to the following prompts. One letter of recommendation is required.  

Application Prompts 

• Describe your proposed project, its intended impact, and how you will utilize the scholarship funds to achieve that impact. Note whether this is an ongoing or new project.   

• What experiences have you had in furthering social justice or providing access to education?  

• What leadership skills and strengths do you bring to this scholarship?  

• Upload a detailed budget and describe any funding you’re receiving from other sources.  

• If you are working with an organization external to the UW, provide the name, title, and contact information of a reference from the organization. We may contact this individual while evaluating your application. If your letter of recommendation is from your partner organization, you may use your recommender’s information here.
