Jackson School Academic Scholarships (JSIS Only)
The Jackson School of International Studies (JSIS) offers numerous prestigious awards and scholarships for JSIS students. The list of scholarships and application instructions are below.
General Guidelines
- These scholarships are open to current JSIS students only.
- Applicants must be enrolled full-time for the duration of the award period, including concurrent enrollment through the UW Study Abroad office if studying abroad.
- In-state, out-of-state, and international students may apply (exceptions noted below).
- The scholarship will be credited toward student’s academic year tuition, unless noted otherwise.
- The majority of the scholarships are prioritized for juniors and seniors, unless otherwise noted.

Donald C. and Margery S. Hellmann Scholar award
Eligibility: JSIS undergraduate students who are rising seniors.
Award Amount: $5,000 stipend to support their education and training.
Priority Criteria: Demonstrated excellence in international studies, clear interest in a career in international affairs, with a strong and creative commitment to promoting the international public good

Ivy Hovey Fitch Endowed Scholarship in International Studies
Eligibility: JSIS undergraduate and graduate students.
Award Amount: $1,000 for academic year or summer tuition.
Priority Criteria: Planning to study foreign language abroad, but others are also eligible.
Neal and Helen Fosseen Endowed Scholarship in International Studies
Eligibility: JSIS undergraduate students that have sophomore, junior, or senior standing.
Award Amount: Covers full-time in-state tuition for the spring quarter.
David Hughes Endowed Scholarship
Eligibility: JSIS undergraduate students that have junior or senior standing.
Award Amount: $2,000 for academic year tuition.
Priority Criteria: Preference to students with an interest in the Foreign Service, and secondarily to those with an interest in diplomacy, foreign affairs, Asian cultural affairs, and/or NGO activities abroad. Also, preference to students who have learned or are learning a foreign language other than the one spoken at home.
Margaret Mykut Scholarships in International Studies
Eligibility: JSIS undergraduate students that have sophomore, junior, or senior standing.
Award Amount: $3,000 for academic year tuition.
Crawford Endowed Scholarship
Eligibility: JSIS undergraduate students who are residents of Washington State.
Award Amount: $4,000 for academic year tuition.
Application Instructions
- To apply: Complete the online JSIS Scholarship Application using the ‘Apply’ link on this page. By submitting one application, you will be considered for all scholarships that you meet the eligibility for.
- Submit the following:
- Resume
- 500-word scholarship statement
- Unofficial transcripts from all colleges attended
- Contact info for one recommender
Evaluation Criteria
The scholarship review committee, consisting of Jackson School faculty, will review the submitted materials based on the following criteria.
- Academic excellence
- Interest and commitment to international studies
- Community service, activities, and work experience
Applicants will be notified via email whether or not they have been awarded a scholarship at the end of the application cycle.
