Jackson School Academic Scholarships
The Jackson School of International Studies (JSIS) is pleased to offer numerous prestigious academic scholarships for JSIS students.
The Donald C. and Margery Hellmann Scholar award opens in autumn quarter, while all other academic scholarships (see below) open in winter quarter. Internship Scholarships open every quarter and you can find more information about them here.
General Guidelines
- Scholarships are open to current JSIS undergraduate students only.
- Applicants must be enrolled full-time for the duration of the award period, including concurrent enrollment through the UW Study Abroad office if studying abroad.
- In-state, out-of-state, and international students may apply (exceptions noted below).
- Scholarships will be credited toward academic year tuition, unless noted otherwise.
- Scholarships are prioritized for juniors and seniors, unless otherwise noted.
- Applications open on January 7, 2025, and close on January 31, 2025, 5:00 PM Pacific.
Donald C. and Margery S. Hellmann Scholar award
Eligibility: JSIS undergraduate students who are rising seniors
Award Amount: $5,000 for academic year tuition
Priority Criteria: Demonstrated excellence in international studies, clear interest in a career in international affairs, with a strong and creative commitment to promoting the international public good
Meet our 2024-2025 Hellmann Scholars! This application will open again in autumn 2025.
Crawford Endowed Scholarship
Eligibility: JSIS undergraduate students who are residents of Washington State
Award Amount: $4,000 for academic year tuition
Ivy Hovey Fitch Endowed Scholarship in International Studies
Eligibility: JSIS undergraduate students
Award Amount: $1,000 for academic year tuition
Priority Criteria: Planning to study foreign language abroad, but others are also eligible
Neal and Helen Fosseen Endowed Scholarship in International Studies
Eligibility: JSIS undergraduate students with sophomore, junior, or senior standing
Award Amount: Full-time in-state tuition for spring quarter
David Hughes Endowed Scholarship
Eligibility: JSIS undergraduate students with junior or senior standing
Award Amount: $2,000 for academic year tuition
Priority Criteria: Preference given to students with an interest in the Foreign Service; secondarily to those with an interest in diplomacy, foreign affairs, Asian cultural affairs, and/or NGO activities abroad; and to those who have learned, or are learning, a foreign language other than the one spoken at home
Margaret Mykut Scholarships in International Studies
Eligibility: JSIS undergraduate students with sophomore, junior, or senior standing
Award Amount: $3,000 for academic year tuition
Jonathan & Helen Louise Noyes Language Scholarship
Eligibility: JSIS undergraduate students
Award Amount: $5000 for academic year tuition
Priority Criteria: Preference given to students currently studying Category III or IV languages listed by the U.S. Department of State’s foreign language training program

- By submitting one application, you will be considered for all scholarships that you meet the eligibility for.
- Submit the following:
- Resume
- Scholarship statement
- Unofficial transcripts from all colleges attended
- Contact info for one recommender
Evaluation Criteria
The scholarship committee, consisting of Jackson School faculty, will review the submitted materials based on the following criteria.
- Academic excellence
- Interest and commitment to international studies
- Community service, activities, and work experience
- Any preferences listed in the scholarship description
Applicants will be notified via email whether or not they have been awarded a scholarship.
