Decoding Mao Zedong’s Nine-Dash Line

This study offers a fresh perspective on the ambiguous cartographic symbol – known as the nine-dashed line – that China claims represents its sovereignty over the South China Sea. To the discussion of the legal and historical implications of China’s position, it introduces heretofore-unexamined astronomical and political connotations associated with the line.
