Wolfram Latsch, affiliate senior lecturer and director of academic services at the Jackson School, reveals the history of James Townsend, the first black Member of Parliament and the first black Lord Mayor of London in his article for London Historians titled “From Gold Coast to Gold Coach: James Townsend, a Black Lord Mayor of London in the Eighteenth Century“.
A longer version of his blog post was recently published in the Oxford University Press journal Notes & Queries as “A Black Lord Mayor of London in the Eighteenth Century?” (December 2016), and it was shared with London’s current Lord Mayor and the aldermen of the City of London.
