July 22, 2025

Name: Dawda Kawsu Jawara Dawda Kawsu Jawara

Degree: B.A. in International Studies

Expected to graduate in: Spring 2026

Hometown: Bansang, The Gambia

Why did you decide to take international studies courses during the summer?

I chose to take these summer classes because they are essential for fulfilling my major requirements, which will enable me to stay on track  for my graduation in the spring quarter of 2026.

What courses are you taking and how do they relate to your personal/academic goals and aspirations?

This summer, I am enrolled in three courses: JSIS B 360: The United States in the World; JSIS D 323: Globalization and You; and POL S 303 A: Public Policy Formation in the United States. These courses are central to my academic pursuit. As an aspiring diplomat, gaining insight into the development of public policy, combined with my experience in the highest echelons of government, will equip me with the requisite skills to effectively contribute to meaningful policy solutions and their implementation.

What inspired you to pursue a degree in international studies?

As a former member of parliament in The Gambia, I cultivated a strong interest in international relations through my extensive engagements both within the country and on the global stage. With the guidance of many individuals I interacted with, I decided to step back from active politics and embark on this academic journey. My goal is to contribute to government efforts in facilitating international security and development.

Would you recommend a summer at the Jackson School to your peers?

I find summer classes to be incredibly rewarding. The condensed schedule of the shorter quarter, combined with the asynchronous nature of the courses, provides me the flexibility to manage my coursework while also enjoying quality time with my wife and the kids. Additionally, these classes help me accelerate the pace of my degree program. I won’t hesitate to encourage my peers at Jackson School to take advantage of this opportunity.

Anything else you’d like to mention?

I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to the faculty of Jackson School and, by extension, the University of Washington, for this incredible opportunity to share my journey with you. I truly appreciate the support and encouragement I’ve received from both the faculty members and the administration staff. I would especially like to thank [Jackson School Director] Danny Hoffman for the time to personally introduce me to some wonderful people at the Jackson School. Finally, I would like to thank [Jackson School Academic Advisers] Holli May, Sabrina M. Tatta, and Joan Marts [ret.] for their invaluable assistance and unwavering support.
