About
Holli May (she/her) is the Senior Academic Advisor at the University of Washington Jackson School of International Studies (UW JSIS) Office of Academic Services (OAS). Her name is pronounced: HAW-lee mAY.
Here at JSIS OAS, I… take great pleasure in advising our undergraduate students to ensure they feel both supported and equipped with the information they need to succeed. I advise in all areas of the Jackson School’s six majors and seventeen minors. My advising philosophy is to holistically support students with empathy, respect, and understanding, while also acknowledging that all students face unique barriers. I provide a safe space to discuss your individualized needs, provide referrals and resources where I can, and strive to assist you to achieve your academic goals.
I like thinking about and studying…social-emotional skill building, anti-racism and equity-centered practice, sense of belonging in higher education, and personal finance. I also enjoy reading classic literature and Nancy Drew novels!
My first year in college…was challenging because I was a first-generation student that didn’t know what to expect. I experienced a bit of culture shock because my university was in a large city setting and I was born and raised in a small rural town in Northern Michigan. Over time I found my support systems in university faculty and academic advisors, and they helped equip me with the tools to succeed both personally and academically. Because of these experiences I am passionate about supporting students with transitions into higher education, helping them develop a sense of belonging, and providing support along the way!
