Mary Callahan pens article on Myanmar’s latest violence in the country’s tinderbox Dry Zone // Fulcrum

February 9, 2022

In her article titled, “Myanmar’s Dry Zone: The History of a Tinderbox,” Jackson School Associate Professor Mary Callahan assesses how the Dry Zone, primarily the central regions of Mandalay, Magway, and Sagaing that receive less rainfall and have substantial underground natural resources, has traditionally not suffered violence at the hands of the Myanmar military. But decades of mismanagement and strained living conditions have fueled anti-junta resistance in the military’s Buddhist-Bamar heartland.

Published Feb. 9, the article represents the first in a series on Myanmar by Callahan for Fulcrum, a media outlet for analysis on Southeast Asia.
