COUNTERING THE ILLIBERAL DRIFT IN EUROPE: Assessing the Role of Civil Society and Governments

Rightwing nationalist parties and movements have become ‘normalized’ features of many European political systems. They govern in some Central and Eastern European countries, have become power brokers in recent Swedish elections, and may lead Italy this fall. These parties and movements promote Eurosceptic and illiberal policies in domestic and EU politics. The Task Force will explore how EU institutions and civil society might counter the hollowing out of European democracies and work with member states to stem this illiberal drift.
