The National Resource Centers housed at the Jackson School offer the opportunity for UW students across all three campuses to apply for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships. FLAS funding allows for the study modern foreign languages in less commonly taught languages of national priority and area or international studies competencies.
“FLAS has been an indispensable component of my collegiate career for two main reasons: It has given me the tools and resources to enrich myself in the Persian language, allowing me to work intimately with Afghan sources in their language of origin, and surrounded me with like-minded individuals dedicated to language and academic study, fostering a productive and collaborative work environment,” said Nathanael Mark, a Jackson School master’s degree student in South Asia Studies and South Asia Center Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellow in Persian (Academic Years 2021-2022 and 2022-2023).
