Europe today is a Europe facing hard times: war, energy scarcity, Brexit, migration — how is the European Union handling these multiple crises? Taking into consideration this new European landscape, JSIS A 301 / POL S 322 in winter quarter 2023 Jackson School Professor Sabine Lang will guide students through a multi-disciplinary approach to contemporary Europe focusing on social, political, cultural, and economic change, with special reference to developments in the countries of the European Union, Scandinavia, and those in Eastern Europe in the post-Soviet era.

Students will become conversant in how and why Europe is experiencing a watershed moment in its post-war identity and politics, from the Russian invasion of Ukraine to dealing with the fallout from Brexit and the pandemic, with refugees and migrants undertaking dangerous journeys to the continent, and the rise of illiberalism across its member states.

Registration opens Friday, Nov. 4
