On Earth Day, April 22, 2013, a career EU diplomat with the European External Action Service, Christian Burgsmueller, will speak about the “EU Roadmap for Moving to a Competitive Low-Carbon Economy.” The presentation is from 1:30-3 p.m., in the Donald E. Petersen Room 485, Allen Library, University of Washington. The event is presented by the Center for West European Studies and European Union Center of Excellence at the UW Jackson School of International Studies.
The European Commission is looking at cost-efficient ways to make the European economy more climate-friendly and less energy-consuming. The European Commission has developed a roadmap for moving to a competitive low-carbon economy in 2050. This roadmap shows how the main sectors responsible for Europe’s emissions — power generation, industry, transport, buildings and construction, as well as agriculture — can make the transition to a low-carbon economy most cost-effective.
Since 2010, Burgsmueller has served as counselor at the EU Delegation to the United States in Washington, D.C., where he heads the Energy, Transport and Environment section.
Burgsmueller is a lawyer by training and joined the European Commission in Brussels in 2000. Over the following six years, he held posts both in the Commission’s Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry as well as in the Directorate-General for Trade. He finished his Brussels years as coordinator for EU-U.S. trade and investment relations. Continuing his career overseas, Burgsmueller headed the Political, Economic and Public Affairs section of the EU Delegation to Brazil in Brasilia from 2006 to 2010.
