Ambassador will honor Rick Steves at EU Center event Oct. 7

When João Vale de Almeida, the European Union’s Ambassador to the United States, visits the University of Washington on Oct. 7, travel expert Rick Steves of Europe through the Back Door will receive the EU’s Outstanding Friend of Europe Award. Steves will be honored as an outstanding friend of Europe for his contribution to transatlantic relations and mutual understanding through his tours and travel programs to Europe. Vale de AlmeidaAmbassador Vale de Almeida and Steves will share their insights on today’s Europe and its longstanding friendship with the United States. Ambassador Vale de Almeida has served as the Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the United States since 2010. Guidebook author and travel TV host Rick Steves has authored over 50 European travel books and is the host of public television’s popular Rick Steves’ Europe.

There will be time for questions for Ambassador Vale de Almeida and Rick Steves.

The ambassador’s visit, organized in part by the UW European Union Center of Excellence in the Jackson School, also includes a free public lecture on “Europe & the United States: A revitalized partnership for a new era,” in the Donald E. Peterson Room, Allen Library, Room 485 at from 2-3:30 p.m. on Oct. 7.

On Oct. 8, the ambassador will speak at the Trade Development Alliance of Greater Seattle at 8 a.m. on “The Big Deal: The US, EU and the building of the world’s biggest free trade area.”
