The Saint Petersburg Archives act on two levels: the Federal level and Federal Subjects of Russia level.
The Russian State Historical Archive and the Russian State Naval Archive are a part of the Federal archives which are under the authority of the Federal Archive Agency.
Seven central state archives, on the Federal subjects of Russia level, which store documents from Saint Petersburg Achrive Fund make up a subordinating network of institutions of the Saint Petersburg Archival Committee.
To date, 11.7 million cases on paper and 0.54 million photographs that are of unique sources and that present a chronicle of more than two centuries of history in Petersburg – Petrograd – Leningrad – St. Petersburg, the province and the region are concentrated in seven State Archives.
