Stephanie Masterman is a transfer student, beginning her second year at the University of Washington in fall 2020. Stephanie belongs to the Tlingit tribe of Southeast Alaska and was born and raised in Seattle, WA. Prior to transferring to the UW, Stephanie studied at Green River Community College, Highline Community College, and the University of Alaska Southeast, Sitka campus. Stephanie is passionate about Indigenous language and cultural revitalization, environmental justice, and race and social justice and equity. She has recently studied her Tlingit language at UAS and continues to learn through community efforts, is a student of the Southern Lushootseed dialect (the language of the Coast Salish peoples whose ancestral homelands Seattle is built upon), and plans to study the Inuktitut language of the Inuit, offered through the Arctic Studies minor program. Stephanie works as the Retail Manager for Seattle’s first ever Native-owned cultural art flagship store, Eighth Generation, located within the heart of Seattle at Pike Place Market. She has served in leadership roles for her tribe including the 2017-18 Youth Ambassador for the Washington Chapter of Tlingit & Haida and the 2018-2019 Emerging Leader for the Executive Council of the Central Council of Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska. Stephanie is also a member of the Burke museum’s first cohort of the Indigenous Research Family and is currently pursuing the American Indian Studies major and Arctic Studies minor.
