Richard Watts

Richard Watts, director of the Canadian Studies Center from 2017-22, is Associate Professor of French at UW with research and teaching interests in 20th- and 21st-century narratives of environmental change in the francophone world, including Québec and other French-speaking regions and communities in Canada, and in the theory, practice, and politics of translation. He previously served as Associate Dean of International Programs and Executive Director of the Center for Global Education at Tulane University (where he oversaw a Title VI B grant). Most recently, he served as chair of the UW Department of French and Italian Studies (2012-2017). He is the recipient of individual research support from the Georges Lurcy Charitable and Educational Trust, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and, in 2017, co-directed and administered an NEH Summer Institute on the urban environmental humanities with 25 participants and a budget of $179,256.
