About

My name is Olivia Zittel and I am a third year here at UW pursuing a degree in History. I became interested in the Arctic after taking Inuktitut as it opened a part of the world that I didn’t think that much about. As a history major, I have a focus in War and Society so another thing that piqued my interest about the Arctic is its use in military development and its impact on the Indigenous groups who lived there. Rather than focusing on environmental changes to the Arctic, I am interested in cultural shifts that are the result of wartime activity. I hope that the Arctic Studies minor will help me understand these shifts both in Canada and outside of it. As well, I look forward to learning about Arctic Indigenous groups and about the international diplomacy that shapes the Arctic today.
