About

Maya is a graduate student at the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs. At SMEA, she studies harmful algal bloom monitoring programs, as well as environmental policy with a focus on marine systems, coastal communities, and indigenous relations. She has had the opportunity to engage in a more specialized study of environmental issues related to Indigenous self-determination, as well as Indigenous interactions with state and federal governments. With the FLAS Award, she hopes to gain the linguistic and cultural tools necessary to better understand Canadian-Indigenous relations, particularly in northern regions near the Arctic Circle.
