About

My name is Adonna Melaku and I’m a second-year student at UBC. I was born in Canada and raised in Ethiopia. That mix has shaped how I move through the world. I’ve always been curious about the in-between spaces, where different cultures and perspectives meet, and how much meaning can be found there.

I visited Seattle at the end of last year and didn’t expect to feel so at home. From Pike Place to the energy on the UW campus, something about it stuck with me. I’m incredibly grateful to be a recipient of the Corbett Award and I can’t wait to return and officially become a Husky!!

More than anything, I’m looking forward to stepping into a new rhythm, meeting new people, learning in a different environment, and seeing where this opportunity leads. I’m looking forward to growing through this experience in ways I can’t yet predict but know will stay with me for a lifetime.

The Corbett British Columbia-Washington International Exchange Program Fund provides an opportunity for undergraduate students at the University of Washington to spend two semesters at the University of British Columbia or University of Victoria; and for students from the University of British Columbia and University of Victoria to spend three quarters at the University of Washington.
