Professional development training in Québec culture

New UW textbook, Défi Francophone.

July 5, 2022

In May 2022, the Center partnered with UW in the High School to provide professional development training for French teachers on Québec topics.

UW in the High School includes almost 20 educators who teach UW French language courses to high school students across the state. This year the Center sponsored Sarah Hurlburt, professor of French and Francophone Studies, Whitman College, to provide professional development training. Hurlburt is a co-researcher on the Canadian project “Trois siècles de migrations francophones en Amérique du Nord (1640-1940)” sponsored, in part, by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

In addition, Hedwige Meyer, teaching professor in the Department of French and Italian Studies and Coordinator and Liaison for UW in the High School French teachers, presented the new UW textbook, Défi Francophone, with considerable content about Québec history, culture and contemporary life. The teachers also discussed how to further incorporate Québec studies into the classroom and where to locate resources.
