Every year the Jackson Report offers our School the opportunity to reflect. We take this occasion to explore how our research, teaching and public programming uphold a long commitment to informed engagement with the world. Whether the subject is visual arts in Cambodia, the politics and economics of global food systems, or the world coming to Seattle for the 2026 FIFA men’s World Cup soccer tournament, the Jackson School community has important insights to share. This is no less true today than at any point in our history.
The intellectual work reflected in this year’s report adds to a lineage that spans two World Wars and a global Cold War; the domestic political contestation over McCarthyism and Civil Rights; decolonization and independence for much of the Earth’s population; multiple global pandemics; accelerating technological revolutions; the invention and passing of too many art and literary movements to count. Our scholars and scholars-in-the-making have never been of one mind or spoken with one voice on any of these subjects – with one important exception.
We have always been committed to the principle that knowledge matters and that scholars should be free in its pursuit. As you read about the accomplishments of our faculty, staff and students over this past year, I hope you will join me in celebrating both our specific achievements and our dedication to making an impact through freedom of thought in higher education. That has been, and will remain, the most important contribution of this historic institution.
