Vanessa Freije, assistant professor of International Studies and Latin American and Caribbean Studies, was awarded an honorable mention by the Latin American Studies Association, 2022 Mexico Section prize, for the best book in the social sciences.
Freije’s book, “Citizens of Scandal: Journalism, Secrecy, and the Politics of Reckoning in Mexico,” which was published by Duke University Press in Oct. 2020, explores the causes and consequences of political scandals in Mexico from the 1960s through the 1980s. In Oct. 2021 Freije was awarded the American Historical Association’s Eugenia M. Palmegiano Prize in the History of Journalism for “Citizens of Scandal.” The Latin American Studies Association is the largest professional association in the world for individuals and institutions engaged in the study of Latin America.
