Marie Anchordoguy earns Foreign Minister’s Commendation for work on U.S.-Japan relations

On Aug. 1, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan announced Jackson School Professor Emerita Marie Anchordoguy as a recipient of the 2024 Foreign Minister’s Commendations; Anchordoguy, whose work focuses on the political economy of Japan, was acknowledged for her 35-year academic career promoting the research of Japan in the United States.

“The Foreign Minister’s Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in international fields, in order to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries and areas,” according to the Foreign Ministry of Japan

During her time at the Jackson School, Anchordoguy served multiple terms as the chair of the Japan Studies Program (2000-2007; 2012-2014; 2021-2024) and was co-editor of the “Journal of Japanese Studies” from 2004-2015. She is the author of numerous articles, book chapters, and several books including “Reprogramming Japan: The High Tech Crisis under Communitarian Capitalism” (2005) and “Computers, Inc.: Japan’s Challenge to IBM” (1989).  

Anchordoguy also received commendations from the Japan Consul-General in 2018 for her work promoting understanding of Japan and U.S.-Japan relations.
