Making sense of a liberal arts degree | Seattle Times

In his article “Liberal arts degree delivers liberal earnings and job satisfaction,” UW College of Arts and Sciences Dean Robert Stacey focuses on the falling enrollment rates in Liberal Arts degrees since the 2008-2009 recession, and cautions about the impact it has on society’s ability to think critically. He argues that in an interconnected world, it is crucial to have an understanding of other cultures and languages and points out that there is little data to support the popular belief that natural sciences and STEM subjects lead to better-paying jobs.

“The graduating class of the Jackson School is an excellent example of the strong job market for liberal arts majors,” he writes. The Jackson School is part of the Social Sciences Division in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington.
