This course dissects how organized sports provide leisure, emotional expression, community, entertainment but also a growing sense of religious identification. Explores the cultural forces behind this modern phenomenon, its evolving ties to mainstream society and the lessons religion offers sports, and sports religion.

Introduction to the role of physical place & sports in the university, including intramurals, club teams, esports, and intercollegiate athletics. Attention to how sport promotes or competes with educational values using Pressbooks or podcast projects

Examines the intersection of education and sport from early childhood to college experiences. Explores educational themes related to physical development, sport’s influence on individual and community development, access to physical activities, equity and inclusion within the sports environment, and the role of sports in social change.

Provides students hands-on business and campaign planning experience, rooted in best practices of consumer/sports marketing. Particular emphasis on how to define, develop, and promote the personal brand of a professional or student athlete.

B CORE 107 D | Putting the Earth in Play: Investigating the Impact of Sport on our Spaces and Places

In this course we will explore how resource use in sports and recreation, from water to maintain green fields, to construction of new stadiums, to the use of shared land for outdoor recreation or travel to events all impact our environment. We’ll explore different ways of defining value and impact, considering economics, environment, community, and personal growth and learn about innovators in both technological and social change that will let us stay connected through sport while decreasing negative impacts on the world around us.

Examination of various topics and approaches to the study of culture in a global context. May include the study art, literature, theater, cultural history, music history/ethnomusicology, and/or cultural anthropology/geography. Topics and approaches may vary with instructor.

Research seminar focused on special topics in interdisciplinary arts and sciences. Includes reflection on the practice of research and its importance for students’ career and life goals.
