Cybersecurity Initiative research fellow Tin Pak presented his research to the Dean of Hong Kong University’s Law School, Professor Hauling Fu. Tin’s research seeks to uncover the extent of government internet censorship and digital surveillance in Hong Kong after the passing of the National Security Law (NSL) in 2020.
In their two-hour conservation, they discussed various aspects of Hong Kong’s legal system and the implications of the NSL on the city’s hybrid political regime. Particularly, they talked about the uncertain status of Hong Kong’s relationship with the PRC and the extent of the former’s judicial independence from the latter. A major research topic Professor Fu suggested Tin pursue further is the PRC’s long-term strategic outlook regarding Hong Kong. Finally, Professor Fu and Tin concurred that the intersection of cybersecurity and law is an increasingly important field of study, especially in cities like Hong Kong whose legal system is in an evolutionary period.
