An insider’s perspective on diplomacy, international conflict, and the path toward peace amid growing global tensions.
As international tensions continue to shape relations between the United States, Iran, and the broader world, questions surrounding diplomacy and conflict resolution have become increasingly urgent. What do negotiations to end the war in Iran look like behind closed doors? What role might the United Nations and Gulf States play in ending violence in Gaza or Lebanon? And is there still hope for diplomacy with Russia?
The University of Washington’s Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies will welcome H.E. Dr. Mohamed Al-Hassan, former Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations and UW alumnus, for a timely conversation exploring these questions and the diplomatic challenges shaping today’s world.
Drawing on his extensive experience navigating U.S.–Iran relations, representing Oman at the United Nations, serving as the United Nations representative in Iraq, and leading Oman’s diplomatic mission to Russia, Dr. Al-Hassan will offer a firsthand perspective on international negotiations and the complexities of global diplomacy.
The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Danny Hoffman, Director of the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, and Dr. Asli Cansunar, Director of the UW Middle East Center. Both in-person and online attendees will have the opportunity to submit questions during the conversation.
The event will take place on Monday, Nov. 2, 2026, from 5–6:30 P.M. PT in the Walker Ames Room at Kane Hall on the University of Washington’s Seattle campus. A livestream option will also be available.
The event is free and open to all. Register here to attend in person or online.
The conversation is presented by the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies and the Middle East Center, in partnership with the Department of Political Science and UW Global at the University of Washington.
