Chinese Boys in America Book Discussion

Update: 2018 Freeman Book Award Winner!

The Forbidden Temptation of Baseball was awarded the 2018 Freeman Book Award. This annual award, sponsored by the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA), the Committee on Teaching about Asia (CTA) of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS), and Asia for Educators (AFE) at Columbia University, recognizes quality books for children and young adults that contribute meaningfully to an understanding of East and Southeast Asia.

Watch for other opportunities to meet Dori and learn about her books!

Description of Past Event

Teachers participated in an evening conversation with Dori Jones Yang about her latest book, The Forbidden Temptation of Baseball, and the Chinese boys who were sent to the U.S. in the 1870s for an American education. The book targets readers in grades 4-7, but the content reflects valuable history and cultural information for teachers of any grade level. At the event, Dori and NCTA Seminar Leader Mary Roberts traced the fascinating history underlying the book’s themes and discussed ways to connect students’ lives and experiences with those of other people in other times and places.
