This course explores the international legal regime governing uses of the ocean environment. Coverage includes an introduction to international law and legal process, maritime baselines and boundaries, vessel navigation rights and obligations on the high seas and in coastal waters, conservation and management of living and non-living resources, vessel source pollution and ocean dumping regimes, rights and obligations of marine scientific researchers and international dispute resolution procedures. Emphasis will be on the 1982 U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea and customary international law.
